10 things you need in your wardrobe that are timeless

The guide below is the easiest way to answer the question
β€œI have nothing to wear.”

Ultimately, it doesn’t come down to not having enough clothes, it’s because you don’t have the right foundational pieces.

Trends always come and go, think wild prints, silhouettes & pieces that are a little β€œout there.” What never goes out of style are your well made, versatile staples that will work season after season, outfit after outfit.

Below are your 10 timeless wardrobe essentials that you need in your wardrobe. They will simplify your mornings, elevate your look, and give you that β€œput-together without trying” confidence.

1. The Perfect White Button Down

White button downs tend to get a bad rep because many immediately think of a cold stale office wearing your button down for an office meeting. However, a crisp, classic white button is a versatile piece in your wardrobe. It can be worn so many different ways. Wear it tucked into jeans for a casual look, layered under a sweater for fall, knotted over a slip dress for a little edge or layering piece or it can even be styled with leggings and sneakers. I recommend looking for one that has a relaxed fit, high quality poplin cotton or a crisp cotton that will soften. Below are some of my favorites:

Wear it tucked into jeans for a casual look, layered under a sweater for fall, or knotted over a slip dress for a little edge. Look for one with a slightly relaxed fit and high-quality cotton that softens beautifully over time.

2. Tailored Blazer

A tailored Blazer is the the most underrated wardrobe piece. A great blazer will instantly make you look polished & put together. Whether are heading to a meeting or throwing it over a t-shirt to meet some friends for happy hour, a great blazer will add structure and confidence. As far as colors, if you don’t have your neutrals covered, I would suggest to start with a black, camel or navy. If you have a great neutral, I would suggest you add a great tweed. My rule of thumb is to try to go a big oversized so that there is ample room for layer and also comfort.

Bonus: it’s also your best travel piece, it makes even leggings look intentional.

3. Straight Leg Denim

Denim is an important staple, but it’s also one of the trends that tend to shift the most frequently. We go from skinny, to wide leg, to flare and back. A cut that tends to stay class is a great pair of straight leg denim, picture that classic 90s Levi’s cut. With denim, it’s imperative that its a great fitting pair. This may take a bit of research and try on sessions to find THE brand that fits your body best. If an off the shelf style is not easy to find a good fit, I would recommend a tailor that specializes in denim. There are also services like Ali Grace, Lenny & Levi’s that will custom fit a pair of vintage Levi’s to you. Although, a bit pricey, it is definitely worth the investment.

4. Black Trousers

If there’s one piece that instantly makes you look like you have your life together, it’s a well tailored black trouser. It’s the definition of quiet sophistication, simple, polished, and always appropriate. You can style them with a crisp blouse for work, or dress them down with a white tee and sneakers for weekend errands. Look for a slightly cropped or straight leg fit that elongates the leg. Once you find your perfect pair, you’ll wonder how you ever got dressed without them.

5. Classic Knit Sweater

There’s something about a soft, high quality sweater that makes even the simplest outfit feel intentional. Whether you prefer cashmere, merino, or a cozy cotton blend, a neutral knit is a timeless layering piece you’ll reach for constantly. Try it over your white button down, draped across your shoulders for a preppy touch, or worn solo with jeans and loafers. I love shades like ivory, camel, and heather gray, they’re flattering on everyone and never feel β€œtoo trendy.”

6. Simple Slip Dress

The slip dress has stood the test of time for a reason, it’s sleek, feminine, and endlessly versatile. Think of it as your year-round β€œone and done” outfit.

Wear it on its own in summer, layer it with a turtleneck and boots in winter, or add a blazer for a dinner out. A midi length in a satin or matte finish always feels refined. Choose neutral tones like black, champagne, or olive that can be easily restyled again and again.

7. Crisp White T-Shirt

Never underestimate the power of a great white tee. It’s the unsung hero of every timeless wardrobe, the piece that ties everything together without trying too hard.

Look for a structured cotton that holds its shape, not something too sheer or flimsy. Slightly boxy cuts feel modern and work perfectly tucked into jeans or under a blazer. When you find β€œthe one,” buy it in multiples, you’ll thank yourself later.

8. Midi Skirt

The midi skirt adds softness and movement to your wardrobe. It’s one of those pieces that makes you look instantly styled, even when you just threw it on.

Go for neutral tones or subtle prints that feel seasonless, think pleated satin, lightweight wool, or structured cotton. Pair it with a knit sweater and boots for fall, or a tank and sandals for spring. The best ones are the pieces you can wear on repeat without anyone noticing.

9. The Classic Cardigan

A classic cardigan is one of those understated pieces that quietly pulls your entire wardrobe together. It’s cozy, versatile, and effortlessly elegant β€” the perfect layering item for those in-between seasons.

Choose a well-made knit in a neutral tone like beige, gray, or ivory. A mid-length or slightly oversized silhouette always feels modern while still timeless. Look for quality materials like cotton, merino wool, or cashmere β€” they’ll drape beautifully and last for years.

What makes a cardigan timeless is its flexibility. You can layer it over a crisp white shirt for a preppy touch, throw it on with jeans for weekend errands, or drape it over your shoulders for that polished, β€œI didn’t even try” finish. It’s the kind of piece that works just as well lounging at home as it does out to dinner β€” and it will always have a place in your closet.

10. Timeless Coat

A classic coat is one of those pieces that instantly elevates your entire look, even if you’re just wearing jeans and a tee underneath. It’s the finishing touch that ties your wardrobe together and makes everything feel intentional.

Opt for a clean, structured silhouette in a timeless color like camel, gray, or black. A slightly oversized fit feels modern but still polished. Wool or a wool-blend fabric will carry you through years of wear, keeping you warm while still feeling refined.

The beauty of a great coat is that it never needs much styling β€” it’s the piece that does the talking. Throw it over a knit sweater and trousers for a pulled-together daytime look, or drape it over your shoulders with a slip dress for evening. Either way, it adds that effortless sophistication that never goes out of style.

Now You Build Your Timeless Closet

Once you have these pieces, you can build countless outfits with minimal effort. Each item complements the others, that’s the beauty of timeless dressing. Keep your palette cohesive, pay attention to fabric quality, and aim for fit and feel over fleeting trends. When your wardrobe is grounded in these staples, getting dressed becomes simple and intentional.

Bonus: Color Palette & Fabric Tips

  • Stick to neutral tones as your foundation whites, beiges, blacks, navy, and grays. Then add one or two accent colors that suit your skin tone (olive, blush, or rust).
